Knights split doubleheader against Trojans

North Platte, Neb. - North Platte split a doubleheader with Trinidad State College on Tuesday to open a four-game series.

Trinidad State took control early, breaking the game open with a five-run second inning. The Trojans added to their lead in the third, plating four more runs behind a pair of home runs.

North Platte got on the board in the bottom of the third when Victoria Arellano hit a single to score Julia Leicht. Trinidad State responded with five runs in the fourth to cap its scoring.

Alieze Moreno blasted a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the fourth. North Platte added one more run in the fifth but couldn't close the gap.

Danica Unger got the start in the circle for the Knights, pitching 2.2 innings while allowing nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits, she walked one.

The Knights bounced back in game two, jumping out to an early lead in the first inning with a pair of doubles that each drove in a run.

Trinidad State scored in the fifth inning on an error, but North Platte responded in the sixth with four runs to put the game out of reach.

Kaylee Davis pitched all seven innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out four and walking three. North Platte totaled 11 hits in the victory.

The Knights (2-10) will continue their four-game series against Trinidad State on Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
